My First Week of Teaching

Last week was my first week of teaching geography in Spanish. I teach geography to second and fifth graders. My teacher Chichi and I (see picture to left) have second graders in the morning and fifth graders in the afternoon. The morning kids get breakfast and both get lunch. I mostly have poor Haitan kids who are not very disciplined. There aren´t any disciplinary actions established at the school so it´s hard sometimes to get them to stay in their seats. The language barrier makes it even harder. Although I´ve had my share of Spanish classes, not being fluent makes teaching geography in Spanish a bit challenging but don´t worry we still have a lot of fun and the kids are pretty cute). Last week I taught them about the Olympics so I had the kids pass around an antorcha (torch) that I made out of construction paper. My favorite thing we´ve done so far, however, is when I did 10 jumping jacks with my second graders as a transition to their next subject. It was pretty great!

Today was the first day of week 2 of our five week summer program and I´m feeling a bit more settled. I have my routine now and I have finally mastered most, if not all, of my students´names. There´s about eighteen in each class so that´s almost fourty names. It makes it easier to keep their attention when I know their names. This week we´re studying western Europe, which I am much more familiar with than southeastern Europe which was the focus last week. I´m feeling more confident with my teaching each day. Thanks for your prayers.

Here´s a fewmore pictures to give you a better idea of where I am and what I´m doing...
